It allows you to make it longer as needed. Straight needles would work, except as you get to near the end of the knitting, you will have SO many stitches on the needles, they may not fit... so circulars will allow them to spread out. Long ones are best if you do not use Denise, or my new favourites... Mine is about 24 inches from tip to shoulder, but since you knit on long circular needles, you can lay it out and check the size as you go. Shorter would be a neck cowl/ kerchief size, and much longer than mine would be a full poncho size!
