I was cleaning out a cupboard where my stash of crafty stuff kind of drifts to, and found two balls of unknown super chunky yarn. The bands were gone, but I knit a swatch on 10 mm needles and then whipped up this in about 1.5 hours! I knit it on straight needles and then sewed a back seam, because I did not have 10mm double points in stock, and it would have taken me longer to drive to Fonthill and Rose's Fine Yarns to buy some than it took to knit the thing!
Pattern:
Gauge: 2 stitches to the inch on 10 mm (US 15) needles. Yarn: bulky, super chunky or 2 worsted yarns held together, that knits to gauge.
Cast on 41. Work in stocking stitch for 7 inches (the rim will roll up naturally). Decrease top by [Knit 4, Knit 2 together] repeat across, on first row. Purl next row. [Knit 3 knit 2 together] repeat across row. Purl next row. [Knit 2, knit 2 together] repeat across row. [Purl one, purl 2 together] across this row. [k 2 together] on last row and gather remaining stitches and sew up back seam!
Very quick, very easy, kindof cute.
Thank you so much for posting this pattern, just made one for my son's girlfriend for Christmas and three for a friend also for Christmas, its takes about an hour and a half to make them and they are fab - Emma
ReplyDeleteThe super-size roll-up brim is exactly what I've been looking for
ReplyDeletethese past few day...over 2-hundred patterns later, there is was. Thank You! Shirley
i love this pattern and just knitted up 2 hats for x'mas gifts!!!
ReplyDeleteI have Denise circulars..how do i change pattern for "in the round"?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
For circular knitting: You can join the yarn in a circle without twisting, after casting on 41. Work around in knit stitch for 7 inches.
ReplyDeleteWhen you start the top decreases, you will HAVE TO GO TO 4 double points in the same size needles, as there will become too few stitches for the circular needle! Keep knitting every row on the double points as you decrease to the last stitches. Then gather as above.
*** I love working on circulars, but felt this project was too quick to spend the $$ for the 10mm double point needles. So unless you are going to make LOTS of them, straights may work best.
Just my opinion.... Chris
What do you mean by purl is that a purl row all the way across.I don't under stand that part.
ReplyDeleteHow would you modify this pattern to fit an 8yr old? This pattern is just what I've been looking for. Thank you!
ReplyDeleteFor the Purl parts, that means the whole row. You are working on straight needles, the purl row is the wrong side... I added the word row to the pattern.

For the sizing... since the gauge is 2 sts per inch, measure the smaller head, and cast on 2 sts for every inch of that measure. You could work to just 6.5 inches for a smaller head, but not much more, or you may lose the rolled rim!!

Instead of double pointed needles, I knit with two sets of circular needles. You say to use 10 mm needles and the knitting site which offered the pattern says 10 US. Which size is correct please. Thanks so much for a quick gift. Susan
ReplyDeleteplease note the pattern above is knit on straight needles. Feel free to knit in stocking stitch on 2 circulars or on 4 double points!
ReplyDeleteI added the US needle size to the pattern... 10 mm = US 15

Oh my gosh!!! I don't know where to start!! I found you through an email from knitpicky or something like that that I recently subscribed to, and to make a long story short, since I couldn't sleep and decided I had to get up and relax, that was the first email I opened. I think it was some kind of collar cable that led me to this site. I have just spent at least an hour browsing your creations and am psyched!! I like this hat and have some chunky yarn in green so I might give it a go!! I have just started knitting again after many years and have managed to make a few hats and a kind of cowl with my second ever cable attempt . .it turned out good, and was fun and I learned how to knit flowers to put on it, but here's a question for you if you don't mind. I don't know how to knit with round needles yet and I want to try. Do you know of a good online tutorial anywhere? Your creations are so very beautiful!! I am sooo wanting to make socks . . Thanks for being out in internet land!! time to try to sleep again :)

I assume you mean double pointed needle knitting in the round. You can search that or try the link below (if it works in comments)

For the Super chunky quick hat, what do you mean about gather remaining stitches.
ReplyDeleteDoes this mean bind off? I'm new to hats and really like this. I have taken apart my first one.
Thanks,
Terry
You will have just a few stitches left on your needle, and instead of binding them off, break the yarn with about 24 inches left, and thread that yarn on a darning needle, then pass the darning needle through the remaining stitches, and gather them tight, then use the needle and tail of yarn to stitch the back seam.
ReplyDeleteHope that makes it easier to understand.
Chris
Wow....I just finished a hat; but, I'm pulling it apart to do this which is much much prettier. Thank you!
